thanks Alex. loved your new episode with Caroline, and this line: "we need to find the courage and the language to start talking about meaning and belonging."
A solar storm is the source of the apocalypse in David Williams' thoughtful novel: "When the English Fall" which pitches an Amish community into multiple dilemmas when a storm takes out the world's electricity system - a probing examination of our resilience (or lack thereof) and its roots. "The English" is how Amish communities refer to people who are not them! https://ncolloff.blogspot.com/2017/09/when-english-fall.html
‘One of the fun things about writing a Substack called the Good Apocalypse Guide is having the excuse to think about all sorts of things that could go badly wrong, and with that in mind, I’ve been wondering ..’
Chef’s kiss. I think you should start writing humorous fiction out of your thought experiments, I’m not actually joking .. 🙃
Thanks Alex. The geopolitical aspects of all this are getting more attention in my field of International Relations. This is often understood in terms of "weaponised interdependence", initially coined by Abraham Newman and Henry Farrell with respect to the internet and other comms infrastructures (as well as dollar hegemony). Charles Parton has been doing fascinating work recently on Chinese attempts to achieve dominance in the internet of things through its control of cellular modules (comms devices which are now in everything). It's worth reading his evidence to the US Congress last week. https://docs.house.gov/meetings/ZS/ZS00/20251211/118729/HHRG-119-ZS00-Wstate-PartonOBEC-20251211.pdf

The black out in Spain gives a good idea of how people respond… quite well! (In the short term)..
We have a landline … but it runs on VOIP now so that bit of resilience has gone.
If you wanted to scare me, you succeeded.
